A growing multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer – Structural (Bridge) to join its established Bridge Department in Wall Township, NJ.
This is a senior technical leadership position for an accomplished bridge engineer who wants to remain closely involved in complex engineering while providing technical direction, mentoring engineers, improving design standards, and helping shape the continued growth of a highly regarded transportation practice.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across major bridge design, rehabilitation, replacement, and transportation infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey and the Northeast.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and oversight for complex bridge design, rehabilitation, replacement, and infrastructure projects.
- Serve as a senior technical resource for Project Managers and bridge engineering teams.
- Lead QA/QC reviews of structural calculations, plans, specifications, reports, and design documentation.
- Oversee bridge analysis and design in accordance with AASHTO LRFD, NJDOT, and other applicable agency standards.
- Provide technical direction for structural modeling, load ratings, evaluations, rehabilitation, and replacement designs.
- Collaborate with roadway, traffic, geotechnical, environmental, hydraulic, and construction engineering teams.
- Develop innovative engineering solutions for technically challenging bridge projects.
- Mentor junior, mid-level, and senior engineers and support their technical and professional development.
- Help develop department design standards, technical resources, procedures, and engineering best practices.
- Support proposals, project pursuits, technical presentations, and client interviews.
- Build and maintain relationships with NJDOT, counties, municipalities, transportation authorities, and other public-sector clients.
- Contribute to strategic planning and the continued growth of the Bridge and Transportation practice.
- Conduct bridge inspections, site visits, and field assessments when required.
Project Experience
Projects will include a diverse range of bridge and transportation infrastructure assignments, including:
- Bridge replacements and rehabilitations
- Highway and roadway structures
- Historic bridge rehabilitation
- Deck replacements and bridge widenings
- Steel plate girder and rolled steel beam bridges
- Prestressed concrete structures
- Load ratings and structural evaluations
- Seismic evaluations
- Culverts and pedestrian bridges
- Waterfront and movable bridge structures
- Staged construction and complex transportation improvements
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- New Jersey, New York, and/or Pennsylvania PE preferred, or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
- 15+ years of progressive bridge and structural engineering experience.
- Extensive experience with bridge design, rehabilitation, replacement, and structural evaluation.
- Strong knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and NJDOT bridge design procedures.
- Historic bridge design and rehabilitation experience is highly desirable.
- Experience providing technical leadership and QA/QC oversight.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and develop technical teams.
- Experience with bridge analysis/design software such as LEAP Bridge, LARSA, MIDAS, CSiBridge, STAAD, or similar.
- AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience.
- Strong communication, technical problem-solving, and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
- Existing relationships with transportation agencies and public-sector clients are advantageous.
- Business development, proposal, and client-facing experience is preferred.
