Principal Engineer – Land Development

Location: Suffern, NY or North Jersey area

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Principal Engineer to lead and grow our Land Development practice across New York & New Jersey. This leadership role is responsible for managing complex land development projects, mentoring engineering staff, fostering client relationships, and contributing to strategic business growth. The ideal engineer is a licensed Professional Engineer with extensive experience in site development, municipal permitting, and project delivery across public and private sector markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, design, and execution of land development projects from concept through construction.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for a variety of commercial, residential, industrial, institutional, and mixed-use developments.
  • Manage multidisciplinary project teams to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a trusted technical advisor.
  • Support business development initiatives, including proposal preparation, client presentations, and identifying new market opportunities.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop engineers, project managers, and technical staff.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of:
    • Site plans
    • Grading and drainage plans
    • Stormwater management systems
    • Utility design (water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer)
    • Erosion and sediment control plans
    • Construction documents and technical specifications
  • Coordinate with architects, planners, surveyors, environmental consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Manage permitting and approvals with local, county, and state agencies.
  • Provide technical leadership and ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, zoning regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Participate in strategic planning for the continued growth of the Land Development practice.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in New York or ability to obtain reciprocity within six months.
  • 12–20+ years of progressive civil engineering experience with a strong focus on land development.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Site development design
    • Stormwater management
    • Utility infrastructure
    • Grading and earthwork
    • Local and state permitting processes
  • Experience with municipal approvals throughout New York and the surrounding region.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and client management skills.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop engineering staff.
