Project Manager - Transportation

Position Summary

The Transportation Project Manager will oversee the planning, design, coordination, and successful delivery of transportation infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey. This position will manage projects involving roadway improvements, bridges, traffic engineering, drainage systems, pedestrian facilities, and related infrastructure projects for NJDOT, county agencies, municipalities, and other public or private clients.

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, leadership abilities, and project management skills to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable regulatory and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Manage transportation engineering projects from concept development and preliminary design through final design, construction support, and project closeout.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, agencies, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, staffing plans, and deliverables.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams consisting of roadway, bridge, traffic, structural, environmental, geotechnical, and utility coordination professionals.
  • Prepare, review, and oversee engineering plans, technical reports, specifications, estimates, and contract documents.
  • Ensure compliance with NJDOT standards, local regulations, applicable permits, and industry best practices.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews to maintain high-quality project deliverables.
  • Coordinate meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, utility companies, and contractors.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, resolve technical and schedule challenges, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Support business development activities, including proposal preparation, client relationship management, and identifying new project opportunities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff and support their professional development.
  • Assist with construction administration activities, including responding to contractor inquiries, reviewing shop drawings, and addressing field issues as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 8-15 years of experience in transportation engineering and project management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing NJDOT, county, municipal, or transportation authority projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of New Jersey preferred or required, depending on experience level.
  • Strong knowledge of roadway design, traffic engineering, drainage, construction staging, and transportation infrastructure standards.
  • Experience with project scheduling, budgeting, resource management, and contract administration.
  • Proficiency with engineering software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads, or related design platforms.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, leadership, and client management skills.
