We’re partnering with a well-established consulting engineering firm to find an experienced Resident Engineer for transportation-related projects across the New York area. This is a strong opportunity for a senior construction professional who knows how to lead field teams, manage contractor performance, and keep complex public infrastructure projects moving safely, efficiently, and in line with client expectations.
This role is ideal for a Resident Engineer with deep experience on NYSDOT, NYSTA, MTA Bridges & Tunnels, or Metro-North Railroad projects who is confident managing day-to-day construction operations, coordinating multiple stakeholders, and solving problems tied to schedule, budget, quality, and safety.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead and supervise an assigned field office, typically including inspectors, office engineering staff, and community liaison personnel
- Oversee daily construction observation for transportation-related projects in the New York market
- Review and verify contractor schedules, including baseline schedules and progress updates, in coordination with the client
- Perform inspections, observe field testing, and support project commissioning activities
- Assist with the preparation and negotiation of construction change orders
- Prepare and contribute to weekly and monthly project reporting
- Review contractor payment applications and vouchers
- Review payroll certifications, labor compliance documents, and related contractor reports
- Chair project progress meetings and distribute meeting minutes
- Monitor site safety, permit compliance, and coordination with nearby or adjacent projects
- Ensure contractor compliance with approved Safety and Health Plans and Safe Work Plans
- Monitor contractor compliance with approved Quality Plans
- Coordinate with contractors to reduce disruption to the public during construction
- Log, track, and coordinate responses to RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings with the design team
- Prepare punch list items with the owner at project closeout
- Resolve field and project challenges tied to schedule, budget, and delivery as part of the wider project team
What They’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management
- Professional Engineer license in NY or NJ
- 10+ years of experience in Resident Engineer duties and management of construction field teams
- Strong experience on NYSDOT, NYSTA, MTA Bridges & Tunnels, or Metro-North Railroad construction projects
- Knowledge of Project Management Procedures (PMPs) and Project Management Guidelines (PMGs) is a plus
- OSHA 30 certification required
- Ability to drive and travel to project sites as needed
- Strong leadership, communication, reporting, and coordination skills
