Transportation Group Manager

An established and growing multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Transportation Group Manager to lead its combined Highway/Traffic and Bridge practices from its Wall Township, NJ office.

This is a senior leadership position offering responsibility for the strategic growth, technical direction, project delivery, and financial performance of the Transportation Group. The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team while maintaining key client relationships and expanding the firm's transportation presence throughout New Jersey and the Northeast.

The position is well suited to an experienced transportation leader who wants the opportunity to directly influence the direction and growth of a practice within an employee-owned, mid-sized consulting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Highway/Traffic and Bridge practices, providing overall strategic and operational direction.
  • Manage and develop Project Managers, engineers, and technical staff across the Transportation Group.
  • Oversee transportation projects to ensure successful delivery against scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Serve as a senior technical and project management resource on complex transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with NJDOT, transportation authorities, counties, municipalities, and other public-sector clients.
  • Identify new business opportunities and support continued growth of the transportation practice.
  • Lead and support proposals, scopes, fee development, contract negotiations, presentations, and project pursuits.
  • Manage group workload, staffing, utilization, backlog, and overall financial performance.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop engineers and Project Managers while supporting succession planning within the group.
  • Promote collaboration between Highway/Traffic, Bridge, Civil/Site, Geotechnical, Environmental, Water Resources, and Construction Engineering teams.
  • Provide technical oversight and QA/QC for transportation projects and deliverables.
  • Support strategic planning and provide leadership with insight into market opportunities, staffing requirements, and client needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; New Jersey PE preferred or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
  • 15+ years of progressive transportation engineering experience.
  • Strong technical background within Highway/Traffic, Bridge Engineering, or both.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and managing Project Managers and technical professionals.
  • Experience delivering complex transportation projects from planning and design through construction.
  • Strong knowledge of project management, including budgets, schedules, staffing, QA/QC, and financial performance.
  • Established experience working with NJDOT, counties, municipalities, transportation authorities, and other public agencies.
  • Proven business development and client relationship management experience.
  • Strong understanding of AASHTO, NJDOT, MUTCD, FHWA, and applicable transportation engineering standards.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, mentoring, and organizational skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous responsibility for a transportation group, department, or engineering practice.
  • Relationships with NJDOT, NJ Turnpike Authority, Garden State Parkway, DRJTBC, counties, and municipalities.
  • Experience developing and executing transportation practice growth strategies.
  • Existing industry relationships or demonstrated ability to generate a strong project backlog.
  • Experience recruiting and developing senior engineering professionals.
  • Active involvement with transportation or engineering industry organizations.
